NEWS NOTES

🏠 Fresh Start in Crescent Valley

Somerset A.C.R.E.S. is giving 21 people experiencing homelessness a place to call home. The Crescent Valley site features private trailers, a shared kitchen, and a laundry space that’s already a hit.

Manager Sara Graham says residents are setting goals and building independence. “I’ve never seen people so excited to do laundry in my life,” she shared. With 24/7 staffing, the project aims to help tenants transition into long-term housing. (Country 94)

đź’¸ SJ Zoning Refunds Made Easy

City Council is mulling changes to the zoning by-law, including easier planning refund requests and a 60% refund for dropped applications before public notice.

The hearing’s set for Monday, January 27, at 6:30pm  in the Council Chamber. Want to dive deeper? Check out the details at City Hall or send written objections. Zoning might not be glamorous, but it shapes Saint John—so, speak up!

🏒 Sea Dogs Captain Traded to Rimouski

Eriks Mateiko, captain of the Saint John Sea Dogs, is on the move. The team announced his trade to Rimouski on Monday, a deal that brings Saint John four draft picks for 2026. Head Coach Travis Crickard says the trade gives Mateiko a shot at the Memorial Cup and sets the Sea Dogs up for future success.

Mateiko’s star has been shining bright—he led Latvia with five goals at the World Juniors in Ottawa over the holidays, including a shootout clincher in a stunning upset over Canada.
