NEWS NOTES
🛑 Parking Lot Proposal Hits the Curb
JDI’s plan to turn part of Wolastoq Park into a 500-stall parking lot is officially off. After a tense council meeting ended in a tie, Mayor Donna Reardon cast the deciding vote in favour of a five-year temporary rezoning - a compromise meant to balance industry needs with public pushback.
Irving wasn’t having it. They withdrew the application on Friday, calling the city’s conditions unworkable. For now, the park stays a park.
🐾 Parvovirus Alert: Keep Your Pups Protected
Heads up, dog owners! A rise in canine parvovirus cases has been reported in New Brunswick, following similar outbreaks in Nova Scotia. While not new, it’s a virus that has vets on edge.
Parvovirus is highly contagious and spreads through saliva or contaminated surfaces like soil and feces. Dr. Andrew Cohen from UPEI’s Atlantic Veterinary College warns if your dog has been around other pups, especially in public places, keep a close eye on their health.
Look out for symptoms like sudden, watery diarrhea and vomiting. If your dog starts showing signs, it’s best to contact the vet. While there’s no cure, vaccines are your dog’s best defence. Keep up to date with shots, and avoid places where the virus could be lurking.
🍩 Little Boss on the Beat
The Saint John Police are handing over the badge, but only to someone under 4 feet tall and under 13. The annual Chief for a Day contest is back, giving one lucky local kid (aged 5-12) a chance to run the show during National Police Week, May 11-17. All it takes is a one-page essay about your hero. Deadline is May 9, and yes, the day includes sirens, squad cars, and likely some donuts.
