NEWS NOTES

Plugged In and Under Review

After years of eyebrow-raising power bills and a $5-billion mountain of debt, NB Power is getting the full diagnostic treatment. Premier Susan Holt says the status quo is toast, and the province has launched a sweeping review of the Crown corporation to figure out how to keep the lights on without frying wallets.

A three-person independent panel, still to be named, will dig into the utility’s finances, governance, customer expectations, and whether it’s appealing enough to future partners or investors. Public feedback will be a key part of the process, with engagement set to begin in June and recommendations expected by March 2026.

Meanwhile, this review is separate from the ongoing audit that’s poking into recent bill spikes. And while no one’s saying NB Power is up for sale… no one’s not saying it either. Everything’s on the table.

🚧 Main Street Makeover

Saint John’s Main Street is about to look, and feel, totally different. The city has just green-lit a $3.4 million project that will bring major upgrades to the area, including a reduction of lanes on Main Street North and the Viaduct from six to four. This change is all about making more room for pedestrians and cyclists, with new buffers and concrete barriers to separate them from vehicles.

The contract has officially been awarded, with a clause that fines the contractor $2,000 per working day - up to $50,000, if the project falls behind schedule. The plan also includes new traffic lights, safer crosswalks, and even a smoother ride for transit users with new lay-bys (bus stops out of traffic). With a reduced speed limit and ramp realignments to curb speeds, this project aims to make Main Street safer and more accessible for everyone. You can check out the full initial concept - notes, images, and renderings - on the Shape Your Saint John page.

You Can Ride 2: Learn-to-Bike Clinic | Thursdays, May 9–June 13
Riding a bike should be a childhood rite of passage,  but for kids with coordination or balance challenges, it can feel out of reach. That’s where You Can Ride 2 comes in. This free, research-based clinic helps kids 8+ who haven’t yet mastered two wheels build the skills and confidence they need to ride.

Led by pediatric physiotherapist “Sue the Physio” (aka Susan Lawton) and a team of cycling-loving volunteers, the program runs Thursdays in the Rothesay Arena parking lot. Kids get one-on-one support in a fun, encouraging environment - and for many, it’s where the dream of riding finally comes true.

Sessions are 6-7pm or 7-8pm. Space is limited and fills fast. To register email [email protected]
