NEWS NOTES
š Saint Johnās Got a Prescription for More Doctors
Saint John is putting its money where its stethoscope is, launching a new medical scholarship to help lure future doctors to the city. Council just approved funding for two medical students through the New Brunswick Medical Education Foundation, with a catch. After graduation, theyāve got to hang up their white coats right here in Saint John.
Coun. Greg Norton, who prescribed the move, says itās simple, get them training here, and odds are theyāll stay. The cityās chipping in $10,400 a year for four years, with recipients required to work in Saint John for each year they receive support.
With the fight for healthcare talent fiercer than ever, this is one way the cityās making sure we donāt just export medical gradsāwe keep a few, too.
š¼ Local Tycoons Head to D.C.
Premier Susan Holt is packing her bags for Washington, D.C., and sheās not going alone. Some of Saint John's biggest business players are coming too. J.D. Irving, Limited and Cooke Aquaculture are among the New Brunswick heavyweights heading south this week to remind U.S. lawmakers just how much they love our seafood, lumber, and potatoes.
The three-day mission kicks off today, with Holt and company meeting congressional reps, senators, and other decision-makers. The agenda includes strengthening cross-border trade ties and making sure New Brunswick stays top of mind when it comes to energy, forestry, and aquaculture.
With our province's deep connections to New England and beyond, this trip is all about keeping business booming. And with Mrs. Dunsterās along for the ride, at least theyāll have snacks covered.

LOCAL BUSINESS
š Suwannaās Uptown Comeback
If youāve spent the last few months wistfully daydreaming about Suwannaās legendary Thai dishes, snap out of it! Itās back, and itās uptown! The beloved spot, once tucked away on the west side, is making its grand return this Friday in a brand-new Germain Street location. And if youāre wondering where that is, itās where Taco Pica used to be (yeah, we know - the Saint John address system).
But donāt expect the usual exposed brick and reclaimed wood aesthetic Uptown is known forā¦owner Donna Watkins had something different in mind. āItās not for us, itās for you,ā she told SJ Today, and she meant it. From the wine glasses to the wall panels, everything has been handpicked (and imported) to create a dining experience unlike any other in the city.
Of course, all the Suwanna staples that had people making cross-town pilgrimages are still on the menu, along with some fresh new additions. Cocktails, appetizers, full meal, you name it. If youāre looking to impress a Valentineās date or just treat yourself to a well-earned feast, consider this your official excuse to book a table. But be quickāreservations open by phone only starting today at 11 AM.
