NEWS NOTES
🚦Simms Corner: The West Side's Traffic Headache
Simms Corner can be a maze for non-locals and a daily frustration for westsiders, especially during Harbour Bridge work or when the lineup for Ready Street stretches on the way home. With more cargo coming into the port, the intersection is feeling the pressure. While a roundabout has been suggested, many think it’ll take more than that to untangle the mess. Thankfully, the province is on it, but it’ll take time and a big investment.
The province is teaming up with the city, J.D. Irving, and Port Saint John to redesign the area, with engineering firm EXP leading the charge. This isn’t just about easing congestion…it’s about making sure the flow of traffic, goods, and people works better for everyone.
Of course, a fix this big will take time and a hefty investment from all levels of government. And let’s just hope the Harbour Bridge updates are done before this project begins (can you imagine!?). Council will get an update on April 3. Until then, take a deep breath and embrace the chaos.
👮‍♀️ Women in Policing Recruitment Camp
The Saint John Police are hosting their first Women in Policing Recruitment Camp on May 22, 2025, aiming to inspire women to consider a career in law enforcement. This initiative is part of the force's push to increase diversity and better reflect the community it serves. With women currently making up only 23% of police officers in Canada, the camp will offer hands-on experience and direct interaction with female officers across various roles.
The one-day event will showcase policing opportunities, from patrol to criminal investigations, and provide an inside look at what life in the force is really like. For more details and to apply, visit the Saint John Police website.
🤷‍♂️ Come on, really?
Hampton’s school soccer field took a beating Saturday night, and not from a hard-fought match. Someone decided to take their big, loud pickup for a joyride on the turf around 10:15pm, leaving the field in a mess. Police say the truck had rooftop lights, an obnoxious muffler, and likely a busted passenger-side tail light…because clearly, great decision-making isn’t this driver’s strong suit.
It’s frustrating to see a community space wrecked like this, especially one meant for kids to enjoy. If you know who’s responsible, give the Hampton RCMP or Crime Stoppers a call. Let’s keep the fields for soccer, not skid marks.
🎾 Quispamsis' Cade Nadeau Holding Court in NCAA Tennis
Quispamsis' own Cade Nadeau is making waves in U.S. college tennis, competing as the No. 1 singles player for Southern New Hampshire University. The senior had a hard-fought match Tuesday against Boston College, pushing his opponent in a tight 7-5, 6-2 loss. He and his doubles partner also kept it close, falling 6-4. SNHU may have taken the loss, but Cade is proving he can hang at the top. Keep swinging, Cade - we’re watching!
