ROCKS OF REMEMBRANCE HONOUR LOCAL HEROES

Sherri Colwell-McCavour painted 115 rocks with poppies to share with veterans in our region and in Ottawa this Remembrance Day.

In a heartfelt tribute to Saint John’s veterans, local artist Sherri Colwell-McCavour has made it her mission to honor those who served by painting rocks adorned with bright red poppies. Sherri began this project in 2020 with just a handful of painted stones placed around Ridgewood Veterans Wing, aiming to share a message of gratitude. Each year, her project has grown and this year alone, she set a goal to paint 100 rocks by Remembrance Day and surpassed it, completing 115 before the end of October.

This Remembrance Day, Sherri’s rocks will find their way to Ridgewood Veterans Wing, Cedar Hill Field of Honour, and Lorneville Memorial Monument, with a few even reaching the National War Memorial in Ottawa, thanks to a friend. “I hope when someone finds one, they pause to reflect on what we owe those who served and sacrificed,” she says. Her poppy rocks, created with care and gratitude, are a simple yet powerful reminder that even the smallest gestures can express deep appreciation for our heroes.
