NEWS NOTES
⛸️ Uptown Skates… For Now
Saint John’s brand-new outdoor rink at Ihtohli-maqahamok – The Gathering Space is ready to wow skaters... when the weather cooperates. Unfortunately, today’s unseasonably warm temps (a tropical 10°C!) and drizzle means the ice likely isn’t quite rink-ready. The City’s crew is keeping an eye on conditions, but the rink may need another cold snap to get back in action.
When operating, the rink will be open daily from 9am-9pm, with city staff working hard to maintain the ice. There are a few rules to keep in mind too—no-hockey-sticks, no-pets, and no-rough-play—otherwise, it’s perfect for a family-friendly skate. Helmets are recommended, and skates are mandatory.
Keep your eyes on the forecast, and cross your fingers for colder weather to bring back this winter fun spot!
🗡️ Slicing Through History
Forget Excalibur – Saint John’s got its own legendary blade, and it’s finally coming home. This Civil War sword, last seen in the 1800s, is returning to its rightful spot in the Loyalist House Museum. The blade’s history is as sharp as it gets. It belonged to Lieutenant Colonel William Thomson, a Saint John-born soldier who fought with the Union Army.
After decades of who-knows-where, the sword was recently tracked down (no metal detector needed!) and donated by a generous collector. Starting in January, you can check it out in person – just don’t try to channel your inner Zorro. The Loyalist House team assures us the sword won’t be cutting into their furniture, but it’s already carving out a place in Saint John’s rich history.
🛠️ Rothesay’s Silent Auction Starts Now!
Ready to score some surplus gear? Rothesay is hosting a silent auction for equipment that could be yours if you’re quick! Submit your sealed bid by January 10th and you might walk away with something awesome. Drop your bid off at Rothesay Town Hall on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. (with a lunch break in between, of course).
See the goods at 10 Master Drive or online on Facebook Marketplace. Bids will be opened in a public meeting on January 14th, so get your game face on! For more details, reach out to Brett McLean at [email protected].
