NEWS NOTES

🔥Saint John Fires Back: U.S. Tariffs Hit Hard, But We’re Not Rolling Over

Trump has been stamping his feet since January, and yesterday, he finally jumped. The U.S. slapped 25% tariffs on goods, 10% on energy, and Saint John could be taking the hardest hit in the country.

Mayor Donna Noade Reardon calls it “a sad day” but says it’s time to move on. “We’re breaking up,” she declared, adding that Saint John’s deep-water port is ready to push into new markets. The U.S. may be slamming the door, but we’ve got other ways to get where we’re going.

Premier Susan Holt is stepping in with a $162-million relief plan to help businesses and workers. She hasn’t pulled the plug on electricity exports or pension investments in the U.S., yet - but she’s not ruling anything out. “They were our best friends, and now they’re attacking Canada,” she said.

Meanwhile, our province is joining the rest of the country in tearing down some of its own trade barriers, betting that if the U.S. doesn’t want our goods, the rest of Canada should. It’s a reminder that we’ve spent too much time looking south when opportunity exists here at home.

Yes, this stings. But Saint John has never been the type to sit around licking its wounds. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce report may say we’re the most exposed city in Canada, but that just means we have the most to gain by adapting faster, smarter, and stronger.

So, let the U.S. play its games. We’ve got our elbows up with work to do. Read the mayor’s full statement here, the Chamber’s report here, and the province’s response here. And if you’re feeling fired up? Maybe start by buying something Canadian today.

⚛️ Turning Nuclear Waste into Something Useful

Saint John’s own Moltex Energy is flipping the script on nuclear waste. Instead of just figuring out where to stash it, they’ve developed a way to recycle it into something useful with their Waste to Stable Salt (WATSS) technology…basically, the nuclear industry’s version of up-cycling.

The big news this week is that they’ve now proven this works on real spent fuel from Canadian reactors, which is a massive deal. In just 24 hours, they can extract 90% of the good stuff, shrinking the waste pile and making nuclear power even cleaner. With demand for nuclear energy on the rise, Moltex is positioning Saint John as a leader in the future of sustainable power.

Backed by the feds, the province, and even local Indigenous groups, Moltex is turning waste into opportunity, right here at home.

💬 The Results: Fiddleheads

Well, that settles it…Saint John is not here for the fiddlehead slander. After TasteAtlas tried to drag our beloved springtime side piece, 81.67% of you fought back with a resounding “Bring on the butter!” Because, let’s be real, anything doused in butter is a win.

One reader’s family treats fiddlehead season like a holiday - hours of foraging, minutes of feasting. Another pairs them with fresh fish and baby potatoes (a classic), while Kim insists on a splash of vinegar for that extra zing.

It’s clear that New Brunswickers will not be taking culinary advice from outsiders. Keep your lukewarm opinions, we’ll stick to our hot, buttery fiddleheads.
